“Without Italy, Turin would be almost the same. Without Turin, Italy would be completely different"
Umberto Eco
Umberto Eco
Turin is the fourth most inhabited city in Italy, with almost 900.000 citizens; it is the capital of Piedmont. Founded by Romans in the I Century BC with the name Augusta Taurinorum, it still maintains the same structure of the old castrum: all the streets are perpendicular and parallel. When Italy declared its unity in 1861, Turin became the first capital, given that it was the capital of Savoia Reign. Famous for its Mole Antonelliana and porticoes, Turin is surrounded by many castles and palaces built by Savoias, like Reggia di Venaria and Palazzina di Caccia di Stupinigi. It hosts different Universities, where almost 100.000 guys study. The XX Olympic Winter Games, in 2006, took place in Turin and its mountains.
